Paid Intern Openings

Spring/Summer 2025

The Lakes Region Planning Commission (LRPC) is a quasi-governmental organization providing land use services to several towns in the Lakes Region of NH. We are looking for several summer interns to provide transportation and natural resources data collection services, as well as event coordination and website and social media material design from late spring through early fall. These typically include the NH DOT Traffic Counting program, Road Surface Management Systems (RSMS) along with USDA and DES Solid Waste events, and EPA Brownfields work to include management, logistics and design of marketing materials for programs across the organization.
 
Potential Responsibilities
  • Participate in training to learn the skills and protocol for collecting field data.
  • Schedule, set up, and collect traffic counts around the region.
  • Review and process traffic counts to NHDOT standards, and upload completed counts.
  • Help prepare for and participate in meetings or correspondence with municipal officials, such as the Road Agent or Town Administrator.
  • Collect field data utilizing GPS, iPad, or tablet. Depending on the project, this might be done as part of a team while driving roads or on the ground around streams and wetlands.
  • Assist in mapping and analyzing data using GIS mapping technology.
  • Household Hazardous Waste collection logistics, coordinator meetings, event marketing, targeted outreach for rural communities.
  • Multi-town site inventory of new potential Brownfields sites with  potential GIS mapping.
  • Other duties may include assisting with public outreach strategies, transportation or watershed planning efforts, hazard mitigation planning updates, or solid waste/household hazardous waste projects, development of marketing materials, FAQ fact sheet, brochure, and website updates for the LRPC website.
  • To the extent possible, assigned projects may be related to an intern’s area of interest.
Intern Qualifications and Qualities
  • Ability to work independently with occasional meetings to review work and provide direction moving forward.
  • Ability to work as part of a team, both in the field and in the office.
  • Strong interpersonal and both verbal and written communication skills.
  • Positive attitude; team player.
  • Flexibility as it pertains to task assignments.
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn to use data collection tools and software.
  • Working knowledge of Word and Excel software. Working knowledge of GIS (i.e. ESRI) software is not essential, but a plus.
  • Ability to concisely analyze, write-up, and verbally articulate needs assessment and project summary statements.
  • Ability to collect and research topics and present findings in an organized and visually appealing manner.
  • Familiarity with website layouts and social media posting is not essential but a plus.
  • Ability to work in our Meredith office and attend occasional night or weekend meetings and/or events.
  • Open to undergraduate or graduate students.

Intern candidates may be interviewed by phone or in person at our Meredith office and/or on campus under coordination with a program or professor. Interns will be paid depending on skill and experience level, level of self-motivation, ability to work independently, and the ability to work from our Meredith office.
